Seizing Canada’s Moment: Prosperity and Opportunity in an Uncertain World

Today, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, delivered the Speech from the Throne to open the second session of the 41st Parliament and outline our Government's agenda.

"Two and a half years ago, Canadians gave our Government a mandate to create jobs, keep taxes low, and help make our streets and communities safe for families," said Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "Despite ongoing global uncertainty, Canadians now have a unique opportunity to build on our ingenuity, our immense natural wealth, and our values and stability, to secure our future and our children's future.

"Our Government will deliver on the commitments made in the Speech from the Throne by creating jobs and opportunities for Canadians, supporting and protecting Canadian families, and putting Canada first," added the Prime Minister. "This is Canada's moment; we will seize it together to help ensure that hard working Canadians prosper."

Some of the key measures that the government will undertake under each of its three principal themes include:

Creating Jobs and Opportunities for Canadians:

  • Balancing the budget by 2015 and reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio to pre-recession levels by 2017;
  • Reducing the cost of the federal government to ensure that taxes remain low;
  • Completing reforms to the Temporary Foreign Workers Program to ensure that Canadians always have the first chance at available jobs; and,
  • Expanding trade with the European Union by concluding a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, as well as with markets in Asia and the Americas.
Supporting and Protecting Canadian Families:

  • Supporting greater competition in the wireless sector by addressing roaming costs on networks within Canada;
  • Providing Canadians with the opportunity to choose the combination of television channels they want by requiring that they be unbundled;
  • Taking steps to address geographic price discrimination against Canadians; and,
  • Supporting victims of crime and punishing criminals by introducing the Victims’ Bill of Rights and legislation to address cyberbullying.
Putting Canada First:

  • Providing the Canadian Armed Forces with the tools they need to defend Canada’s sovereignty and vital interests;
  • Providing further support to help meet the needs of veterans, including helping them secure jobs and reintegrate into civilian life;
  • Further strengthening the immigration system, including introducing a new model to select immigrants based on the skills that Canadian employers need to expand their businesses and the economy; and,
  • Honouring Canada’s Confederation as we approach our historic 150th anniversary in 2017.

Dear Friend,

Support for our campaign to put consumers first is growing – but the big wireless companies are fighting our government with everything they’ve got.

Thankfully, we’re not in this fight alone – thousands of Canadians, like you, have told us they are standing with us in this fight.

So today, I wanted to let you know something important: our government will not back down.

We’re going to keep fighting for more competition, lower prices, and more choices in the wireless market.

We’re fighting for this because it’s the right thing to do – and we know that’s why you’re with us.

You can help us fight back right now – share this graphic with your friends and family and let them know you’re in the fight with us:

Sincerely,
Fred DeLorey

Director, Political Operations
Conservative Party of Canada

Putting Consuemers First - Letter from Minister James Moore

Fellow Conservatives,

Our Government is working hard to increase competition and create conditions for real choice in our wireless industry.

Our hard work is paying off: Canadians do have more choice and lower cell phone bills.  In fact, our actions have driven down the average cost of wireless services by nearly 20% since 2008.

Recently, Canada's largest wireless companies have launched a public relations campaign to persuade Canadians and our Government to stop our policy of encouraging competition and more choice. They want us to maintain the status quo in which they hold 90% of the market. But Canadians know better.

Canadian consumers know, instinctively, that more competition will serve their families well through better service and lower prices.

We are not backing down - we know Canadians want lower prices and more choice in the wireless market.

We will continue standing up for Canadian consumers.

Stand up for choice and sign our petition - say you'll put consumers first:

Sincerely,

James Moore,

MP, Port Moody – Westwood – Port Coquitlam

CRTC Decision Today!

08/08/2013

Today's CRTC decision will give better access to Francophones living across Canada than they had before. Nouveau TV5 and AMI TV en Francais will now be included in all basic cable packages across Canada. AMI TV offers television services such as described video for those who are blind or partially sighted, a service which has been offered in English across Canada for the past 5 years. In doing so, the CRTC has made it easier for bilingual communities to have equal access to TV services across Canada while still maintaining affordability for basic cable services for customers.
In addition, controversial Sun News Channel was denied its application to be included in the mandatory distribution package.
